Seller: chblack (5,920) 99.6%, Location: Fairfax, Virginia, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 302144004356 Lot Description One VERY nice hard stone celt was lost along the now dried up lakes of the Sahara 4,000 years ago. This would have been used for tasks such as a breaking up game, breaking bones, and collecting/chopping wood from trees for fires and other unknown uses. This is 5 inches long (125 cm). It is thick a good 1 1/2 inches and COMPLETELY polished. No damage a super nice Sahara tool, I do not have many as good as this, probably the best one I still have left. No modern damage and in pretty good shape, as seen in the pictures. Weight of the two is 15.1 ounces. Background information is provided with my 2-page essay on the subject, which will be included.Neolithic populations living near now dried lakes and rivers in what is now the Sahara desert; used these tools such as this in the processing of game and other campsite chores. The end of the Ice Age resulted in global climate changes which stopped the rains and forced these Neolithic (New Stone Age) peoples into new modes of existence, either agriculture which was just beginning at the end of the Neolithic, or a nomadic animal husbandry mode of existence. The New Stone Age was a very dynamic era giving rise to agriculture, pottery, and permanent settlements, all of which were milestones in humankind's march toward 'civilized' life. The Sahara Neolithic lasted from 9,000 to 4,000 BP (years Before Present). I will include my 2-page essay on the Sahara Neolithic to explain something of the Neolithic era and context in which these tools were found.
