1739 Original Map of SOUTH WEST AFRICA The Cape of Good Hope north A Jacques Nicolas Bellin Work of Art

A very desirable Jacques Nicolas Bellin map, dated 1739 showing the west coast of South Africa, from what would be Angola, Namibia and South Africa.  This was printed 270 years ago at the height of the slave trade and before the vast European exploitation of the continent.  The Cape of Good Hope is named as a Dutch fort. Entitled Coste Occidentale D'AFRIQUE Depuis le XI Dégré De Latitude Méridionale Jusqu'au Cap de Bonne Espérance Tirée de la Carte de l'Océan Méridional Publiée Par Ordre de Mgr. le COMTE DE MAUREPAS en 1739 This outstanding work was by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-72), the important French cartographer who spent over 50 years at the French Hydrographic Service and was appointed the first "Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine", as well as later in life "Hydrographer to the King." Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts. "From the 1520s to the 1860s an estimated 11 to 12 million African men, women, and children were forcibly embarked on European vessels for a life of slavery in the Western Hemisphere. Many more Africans were captured or purchased in the interior of the continent but a large number died before reaching the coast. About 9 to 10 million Africans survived the Atlantic crossing to be purchased by planters and traders in the New World, where they worked principally as slave laborers in plantation economies requiring a large work force. African peoples were transported from numerous coastal outlets from the Senegal River in West Africa and hundreds of trading sites along the coast as far south as Benguela (Angola), and from ports in Mozambique in southeast Africa. In the New World slaves were sold in markets as far north as New England and as far south as present-day Argentina." Nice size, on a much larger page, the image is about 7.75” x 10”. Condition In very good condition, minor if any stains, centerfold. Printed on quality, laid watermarked paper, very strong. Highly desirable. This is a must see/buy.
