WE ARE CLEARING OUT OUR ARCHIVES!

A superb and rare photo. Shown is the great Bob McIntyre on the great, by Joe Pott’s smartly tuned, Norton Manx. Bob McIntyre is on his way to a magnificent 4th place on the 350cc Potts Manx during the Ulster Grand Prix of 1955. Bob finished behind winner Bill Lomas on a factory Moto Guzzi and John Hartle and John Surtees on two semi-works Norton’s. A wonderful result!

In the 1950’s, when Norton pulled out officially from racing, some great Norton Manx tuners emerged. Some of them grew out to legendary fame. We all remember fondly names like Francis Beart, Steve Lancefield, Reg(inald) Dearden, Bill Stuart, Bill Lacey, Ray Petty and, last but not least, Joe Pott.

The talented Scotsman Bob McIntyre chose Potts to prepare him two Manx Norton’s for the 1955 racing season. It is quite unknown that these machines were of 1954 vintage, but not a single part in the engines escaped from Potts’ tuning treatment. They were thoroughly reworked racing motorcycles, with the famous Featherbed chassis to match the tilted engine specifications. Most striking was the fairing on McIntyre’s 1955 Potts Norton’s. It was a full “bathtub” fairing that added greatly to the aerodynamic characteristics of the Manx. It made a 5% increase in the final drive ratio possible so the bikes would achieve their boosted topspeed under normal conditions at the rev limit of 7.500 r.p.m.

What this all meant became clear during the Isle of Man T.T. of 1955. Bob McIntyre and Joe Potts created nothing less then a sensation when Bob took the lead immediately after the start of the 350cc Junior T.T., leaving a field of Moto Guzzi Bialbero and other factory racers behind him. What followed was an epic battle with John Surtees on his factory supported Norton and Bill Lomas on his factory Guzzi. Bob was able to fight them off for an incredible 5 laps, then his engine finally started to overheat and his front brake started to fade. The fairing had its downsides too… Lomas then took the lead and would not let it go anymore. Bob finished second on his Potts Norton, a privateer on a well prepared production racer. Incredible… It caused a stir, Guzzi had won the 350cc world championship since 1953 and they were a huge name in racing. Nobody had expected anymore that a production based machine actually could give the factory teams a hard run for their money during the most demanding race event of the world. In Ulster , where the photo was taken, it went equally great, 4th behind the star riders is magnificent!
