Seller: decartforyou ✉️ (5,853) 100%, Location: London, GB, Ships to: AMERICAS, EUROPE, ASIA, AU, NZ, Item: 393948966899 Mid 19th Century Print 'The Royal Polka' Ballerinas, Fanny Cerrito & Camille. An intricate coloured print titled 'The Royal Polka' and detailing two balerinas, likely to be portraying ballerinas Fanny Cerrito and Camille. From what I could research, this print reproduces an image signed on stone by John Brandard, and published in London in the 1840s as the music cover to Jullien's celebrated polkas, No. 2, the Royal Polka. George Chaffee. The polka enjoyed enormous popularity both as a dance and a musical form. Although opinions about its origins differ, it is believed to have roots in Poland or Bohemia. It was brought to Prague in 1837 and made its way to Vienna, St. Petersburg, Paris, and London. Capitalizing on its growing popularity as a ballroom dance, Jules Perrot and Carlotta Grisi introduced it to the ballet stage in 1844. In the mid 1800s, it rivalled the waltz as a dance craze. The example I have seen was a front page of music so this is likely to be the same as it looks like a pageg from something more. Francesca "Fanny" Cerrito (11 May 1817 – 6 May 1909) was an Italian ballet dancer and choreographer. She was a ballerina noted for the brilliance, strength, and vivacity of her dancing. She was also one of few women in the 19th century to be recognized for her talent as a choreographer. I could not find out anything about 'Camille'.
