We are offering nine 1909 postcards of North Dakota (Aug. 3 through Oct. 26) - showing local people who appear to have been homesteaders.  The towns are Lignite, Palermo, Ross, Crosby, Coteau, St. John, Fargo, and Upham.  The cards were from a traveling troupe of acrobats ST. JULIANS TRIO , who never mailed them but apparently bought them in the different towns where they performed, for the purpose of keeping a record of the dates and places where they performed.  On eight of them, the date and place are written in ink on the fronts, and all have something written on the back: Lignite - "Town is rotten and the hall is a bum"; Palermo - "Left Minot for Palermo Friday"; Palermo - "Big Market Day.  Race won second prize $2.50; Palermo - "Played Palermo Sunday Night"; Ross - "Left Palermo for Ross, N. Dak"; Crosby - "Landed in Lignite Sept. 3rd, '09"; Coteau - "Leaving Lignite for Coteau"; At St. John - "Made velvet knickerbockers.  Played and danced.  Good time.  Worked with Jack"; Home - Lulu went to Fargo.  Glen went to Upham.  Fun all Off" (fun all over, we assume) The postcards titles are: Harvest Time on the Claim; The Round Up of Horses Watering; Branding Calves on the Open Range; Ranch Cattle Heading to the Water; a 16-Horse Team pulling 5 Wagons loaded with Freight up to the Mountains; Getting Our Start (a man, woman and baby moving into their cabin); We're Here to Stay and Looking for a Man (two women outside their cabin; Our Busy Day on the Claim (three men - one washing clothes on a scrub board, one chopping wood and the other peeling potatoes; and Unpacking the Duds on the Claim (opening crates packed with their belongings). **CONDITION** - Very Good, having very minor edge- or corner-wear.
