Ranging vastly in size and styles, these Oil Lamps required wicks, and burned such fuels as animal fat & olive oil. Oil Lamps were safer than candles, actually produced a brighter flame, and were cheaper to burn. Terra Cotta Oil Lamps (some being made in exquisite art forms, embossed, painted, etc.) were cheap to produce, but the main problem was that they broke. Oil Lamps of all sizes and shapes were the main source of producing light for thousands of years before electricity came about... thus Oil Lamps were an important part of each individual and for home / villa life. Beautiful Bronze & Brass Oil lamps were produced in Greece and Rome in hundreds of different Styles, Sizes, and Shapes ~ often enhanced with various symbols or images of gods, animals & scripture. During the excavations of Pompeii, Herculaneum and many villas throughout the surrounding areas, hundreds of thousands of Roman Artifacts were easily uncovered from the 13 to 20 feet of ash and pumice that had covered these areas for centuries ever since the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Systematic excavations of these areas began in 1738 thru 1750, with news of the discovery of ancient cities spreading throughout all of Europe. Enterprising entrepreneurs realizing the potential tourist market ~ created adventurous journeys through Europe that became known as the Grand Tours, in which the more aristocratic & intellectually curious European Tourist traveled to Naples (the southernmost stop of the Grand Tour), to see what all the excitement was about ~ purchasing thousands of uncovered artifacts as souvenirs to take back home as elegant conversation pieces. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the famous Italian volcano Vesuvius erupted several times again spurning additional interest and additional Grand Tours ~ though on smaller scales. ~ When the demand for the actual artifacts through sales to the many tourist depleted the originals, Entrepreneurs and Craftsman made and sold exact Roman Replicas such as this Lamp to the public ~ Illustrated publications documenting the finds uncovered years before (during the 1700's) ~ created a rage for antique styles and reproductions of antiquities that became a major tourist industry throughout the 19th century. **** CHECK OUT our Other AUCTIONS - as we Will Always COMBINE SHIPPING (When Possible) on Multiple Purchases **** BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OUR OTHER AUCTIONS FOR ADDITIONAL RELATED ITEMS!!!!
