KENTUCKY HAND RIVED TOBACCO STICKS
Hand-rived from logs, they were hung to dry and cure tobacco in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Each one measured 24 to 60 inches long 1 to 2 inches width . no longer made or used many thousands lay in barns throughout Kentucky -------- now being made in to frames ------ walking sticks ------- and sold simply as historic reminders or collectibles.
1.Riving converts the greatest mass of wood in the least time with the least effort. 2.Riven stock is stronger than sawn stock-it is an aggregation of parallel long fibers. 3.Riven wood is less likely to absorb and lose moisture. No end grain is found on its broad surfaces. 4. Walking Sticks have been used for thousands of years. Kentucky men used walking sticks on the farm to help with herding the animals or while walking in the woods to help maintain balance while walking on trails and to fend off snakes or other such critters.
