This is a blackware spouted vessel, instantly recognizable as an artifact of its time and place, carved in the form of a cheerful deer, with large, appealing eyes, and a pert nose and ears. The tail curls upward from the back of the vessel, fully three-dimensional, while legs and male genitalia are in low relief on the body of the vessel. The spout flares upward from the back and has no rim. A vessel like this one may have been used ceremonially for holding chicha (maize beer) and for pouring libations onto the earth or storing them in the grave.
