Seller: artemisgallery (669) 100%, Location: Louisville, CO, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 381809975720 Egyptian Limestone Sculptor's Model - Nemes Egyptian, probably late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Periods, ca. 1290 to 30 BCE. This is a model of a generic royal bust depicting a simple nemes with no uraeus. There is a blank space to add a face, presumably because the bust could have been used to model any number of different-headed deities or people. There are very clear grid lines down one half of the back of the sculpture. This piece may have served as a model for a larger sculpture, to teach new sculptors how to replicate a master style, or to produce shabtis (small funerary statues for tombs). The grid lines were probably used to help show proportion or perspective. Like similar pieces, this has an unfinished, functional style. These pieces are difficult to date; some are from the Amarna period, when new forms of statuary came in, but most are from the late Dynastic and Ptolemaic periods. Similar pieces are held in the British Museum, the Australian Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other institutions. Size: 6-1/2“ H x 4-1/2“ W x 3-1/2" L (16-1/2 cm x 11-1/2 cm x 9 cm). #110509 Condition: Some chipping and wear, but grid lines are some of the best preserved and most visible we've ever seen, and the shape of the model is still very clear! Provenance: Ex-Simonian Collection, Switzerland, before 1985 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
