This is a fantastic, charming painted wood mask created by one of the best traditional mask makers working in late-20th century Mexico, Juan Horta Castillo. The face is human with animal features, including large, deer-like ears and enormous canine fangs; bold strokes of red, blue, yellow, and white highlight the black face while gold emphasizes the eyebrows and adds to the face's wide-eyed expression. Juan Horta Castillo, who unfortunately passed away in 2006, hailed from Tocuaro, a famous mask-making village in Michoacán. His work was all done in wood and then painted in vibrant colors using high gloss automotive enamels. In his lifetime, Horta Castillo won many awards, including repeatedly winning first place in Mexico's Mask Maker Competition and being a featured artist at the Art Institute of Chicago.
