THE PEOPLE’S WAR BOOK Salesman Subscription Edition 1919

with Frontispiece Autographed by WWI Canadian Fighter Ace Billy Bishop

The book offered in this auction is the example used by a salesman nearly 100 years ago to sell eighty copies of THE PEOPLE’S WAR BOOK , one of which we are offering today on eBay on another Rapidapolis auction (item # 142244516261).

The book we are offering on this auction is a sample volume used by a salesman to take orders for the real book which was about the same size with about three times the content.  Selling expensive books by this method was a common practice 100 - 150 years ago because people wanted to see what they were buying.

As a sample volume this book has a fold-out cover with spine that shows how thick the actual volume was going to be and contains about 200 of the 520 pages that would be in the actual book.  The is a four-page insert containing a meticulous description of exactly what the finished 520 page book would contain, and in the back there are 7-½ pages of pencil entries giving the names of addresses of the 80 people this salesman sold books to in eastern South Dakota 98 years ago.

Naturally, 1-¾ pound 7-½ x 10-¼ inch hardcover salesman sample book does not contain all 520 pages, but does contain a very nice selection of full-color and black & white photos, charts and maps to excite the interest of potential buyers.  As a superb example of the sales practices of book sellers in the days of World War I, this salesman’s subscription book is in a historic category by itself.  It does include a frontispiece portrait photo AUTOGRAPHED BY WWI CANADIAN AIR ACE LT. COLONEL W.A. ‘BILLY’ BISHOP, the “World’s Ace of Aces” credited with bringing down 72 enemy planes and with an unofficial record of 100 planes.

You can read all about Colonel Bishop on the internet and find out what an incredible soldier he was.  When you are done, you will put him on a par with Pappy Boyington, the Flying Tigers, Werner Mölders, etc., etc.  Where can you buy one of their autographs today?
