The piece is decorated at the front with a stylised octopus, its eight tentacles sweeping around from the centrally placed corpus of the creature to the back of the vessel. Additional amber and brown bands encircle the jug from its base up to the mouth. The octopus motif is a clear testimony to Cretan Minoan influence on Mycenaean art - a cross-fertilisation of two predominant cultures: eventually the north-eastern Peloponnesian Mycenaeans took over Minoan Crete as well as the rest of the Greek world. High quality Mycenaean ceramics - this being a prime example - were made from fine pale clay and painted with glossy brown pigment to create a series of intricate and imaginative, often geometric, shapes. Figural art is however rare in Mycenaean ceramic art, the octopus style seems to have been painted in eastern Attica, the Cyclades, and Dodecanese. Ceramics were traded far and wide by the Mycenaeans and have been found in places as far afield as Lebanon and Cyprus (where this pot may well have been found). Diameter: 5 1/2 inchesHeight: 7 inches Condition: Excellent, intact and with no restorations, beautifully preserved pigment and original surface. Provenance: Collected by Leon Rodrigues-Ely, 1924 – 1973.Leon Rodrigues-Ely was the heir to a wealthy shipping family, which operated a trade route between Bordeaux and the United States. The business was established in the 18th century, and soon grew to a large and successful enterprise. Rodrigues-Ely's wealth allowed him to indulge his passion for art, forming a large collection of rare and beautiful pieces. A copy of a photo of this piece (taken before 1973), will be provided to the new owner, along with a French export licence.
