Seller: artancientltd (9,300) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 390691899885 An ancient Chinese honey glazed pottery figure of a sleeping greyhound, dating to the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 A.D.) Hollow-moulded, the animal is depicted with its head resting by its paws, its tail curled up alongside the right haunch. The piece maintains an attractive honey glaze throughout. A symbol of fidelity, the dog is one of the twelve symbolic animals of the Daoist system of chronological designation. Both the snub-nosed mastiff and the long-nosed, long limbed greyhound are depicted in Chinese art as early as the Han Dynasty. Indeed a wonderful depiction of a greyhound was found in the tomb wall paintings of Prince Yide, buried in 701 AD in the Tang imperial complex outside Changan. A variety of hunting hounds were brought to China from Samarkand and Kucha during the Tang Dynasty, as they were in great demand for imperial hunting expeditions. A rare and charming piece, which once formed part of the world renowned Schloss Collection. For an example of a similar piece, also from the Schloss Collection, please see: Sotheby's December 9th 1987. Chinese Ceramic Sculpture from the Collection of L Schloss. Item 20. Condition: Excellent, unrestored. Length: 3 5/8 inches Provenance: Ex collection of Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Schloss. Ezekiel Schloss is one of the most famous names in ancient Chinese ming-chi (terracotta figure) art. Together with his wife Lillian, he was a prolific collector, well respected authority and author of the major publication "Ancient Chinese ceramic sculpture from Han through T'ang". Schloss arrived in the US from Latvia in 1940. He was an accomplished cartoonist, working for many years at the New York times. The Schloss collection is rare in that it truly represents an educated collection of art; Schloss was immersed in Chinese ming-chi art and only collected beautiful examples of specific types, as well as the unusual, the charming and the rare.
