The base detachable and the piece carved from a block of beautiful veined Egyptian Alabaster.These Alabaster Hydriae are very rare vessel types, known from a small number of extant examples and produced in Egypt for a short period during the Ptolemaic Dynasty. It is likely that the Greek elite living in Egypt at the time had them made by local craftsmen, using the native Egyptian Alabaster to carve this traditional Greek vessel shape.For another example compare Christies December 11th 2009, Lot. 123, which also lists further references.
