Seller: artancientltd (9,301) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 390910880580 An ancient Egyptian bronze figure depicting Apis, dating to the Late Period, 664 – 332 BC. Striding confidently forward, the beautiful caramel patina of this Apis bull lends a beautiful countenance to the piece. A winged scarab is incised across the forequarters, whilst the animal wears a solar disk fronted by a uraeus between his horns, indicating its deification. The projection from the base suggests this artefact was originally mounted to an ancient stand before being dedicated at a local temple. Many animals played a part in the religious life of ancient Egypt, yet the Apis bull was one of the most popular, considered to be the living manifestation of the god Ptah, it was selected and cared for at its cult centre in Memphis. When the animal died, it was accorded all of the highest funerary rights and the nationwide search for the new Apis began. This prospective new bull was required to have a white crescent on one side of its body or a white triangle on its forehead, signifying its acceptance by the gods. These beautiful statuettes were offered at local temples as an expression of devotion and a hope that the gods might offer favour. What we see here then is not only a beautifully expressive piece of Egyptian art and remnant of a lost religion, but the desires and aspirations of a real individual, who hoped this little figure would help them on their way. Height as mounted: 2 inches. Length of bull alone: 2 inches. Condition: Excellent, unrestored and mounted to a bespoke ebony and bronze stand. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the renowned Egyptologist, Gustave Jquier (1868-1946). Mr. Jquier was a pioneering individual, having studied in Paris and Berlin, he became one of the first archaeologists to excavate the ancient Persian sites, indeed he was a member of the expedition which led to the discovery of the famous Code of Hammurabi. In Egypt he excavated sites at Saqqara, including the pyramid of Ibi and the pyramid of Khendjer, at Dahshur. His work on the Pyramid Texts was hugely influential in the academic understanding of these religious works. Copies of a series of photographs of Mr. Jquier in the field will be included in the sale of this piece, upon request.
