They are thought to date to around 550 BC and their production was a speciality of ancient Caere (Cerveteri).On this example the exterior lip of the brazier is decorated with two prominent patterns, impressed using a cylinder seal on the wet clay before firing. One design shows two winged griffins in procession, the other shows a wild boar followed by a winged god.A striking, ambitious vessel. Diameter: 21 inches.Height: 6 1/4 inches.Condition: Restored from fragments, with areas of infill and overpainting. Provenance:From a private collection in Surrey, England and originally acquired in the 1960s-1980s.
