Seller: artancientltd (9,403) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 391299079816 An ancient Greek terracotta female votive mask, or protome, dating to around 550 BC. This would likely have been dedicated in an ancient temple to the local God/Goddess, in thanks for, or in anticipation of a favour. Protomes such as this are relatively well known objects from the ancient world, and are commonly found both in museums and on the private market. However there is a quality to this example that elevates it above the vast majority of protomes that we have seen. The modelling of the face is exquisite and perfectly shows the Greek Archaic ideal. Height: 9 1/2 inches mounted. 8 1/4 inches unmounted. Length: Width: Condition: Unrestored. Provenance: Collected in France before 1970. Provided with a French cultural property export license.
