It was obviously recovered from a submerged source most likely a wreck, as evidenced by the marine encrustations that cover its surface. These statuettes were common in the Phoenician Mediterranean from about 600 BCE - 300 BCE. Today, they are quite rare. No one knows the significance of these idols but they are presumed to be associated with fertility. This one was probably part of a shipment bound for some island in the Eastern Mediterranean that never made landfall. It is a wonderful piece that stands by itself and would grace anyone's curio cabinet.
