Seller: wear-the-past (2,024) 99.7%, Location: Salisbury, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 371787636528 This is an ancient Roman agate intaglio, dating to the 3rd century A.D. It is cut with a representation of goddess Diana (Greek Artemis), leaning on a column. She can be identified by her quiver, slung over her shoulder. Below her outstretched arm leaps a dog or deer, obscured by a large chip. The colour of this wonderful gem has rainbow hues of red, greens and yellows. Originally this intaglio would have been set into a gold or silver finger ring, worn to act as a private signature to seal letters or transactions. The image of Diana would have displayed the owners love of hunting, worn to gain divine patronage from the moon goddess. Today the gem has survived with much of the detail intact, though has suffered from knocks, chips and its time spent buried in the ground. Today it would be possible to remount this gem, enabling this piece of ancient art to be used again.OBJECT: IntaglioCULTURE: Ancient RomanDATE: c. 3rd century A.D.MATERIAL: AgateSIZE: 16.23mm x 11.13mm x 3.11mmWEIGHT: 0.8 gramsThis item is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described.
