Seller: artancientltd (9,302) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 390673198246 This charming Roman bronze figurine of a dormouse dates to between the 2nd - 3rd centuries AD. The animal is depicted standing on its hind legs, holding a small round cake or bun to its mouth with its forepaws. With its large ears pricked upwards the mouse is clearly alert, as if jealousy protecting its food. The surface of the animal is smooth and has a glossy green/brown patina. The Roman propensity towards dormice in their cuisine is famous. However, less well known is their use of ingenious pots in which the animals were kept as they were fattened up. This piece may well be depicting the animal being fed in such circumstances. Small bronzes of various animals appear to have been popular throughout the western Roman Empire in this period. Though it is unknown what function models such as this were intended to serve, it is clear the Romans enjoyed and viewed them with some amusement.
