Beautifully carved in marble and decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves and tendrils. Pillasters are decorative pillars and were used by the Romans to embellish grand villas. This is a particularly fine example, with a rare, decorative quality and a fantastic provenance. Height: 11 inches or 13 1/2 inches mounted Width: 6 1/4 inches Condition: Fragment, as shown. Mounted on a bronze display stand. The surface original, the piece unrestored. An old collection label on one side. Provenance: Collected by Dr. Michael Frederik Christian Lund (1826 - 1907) on his travels as a ship's doctor. Subsequently passed by descent. Dr Lund was a descendant of the famous philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard and Professor P. W. Lund, the renowned palaeontologist. A photograph of this pillaster, with other objects collected by Lund and passed by descent, can be provided to the new owner, together with copies of handwritten correspondence in Danish relating to Lund's travels.
