Seller: artancientltd (9,300) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 291077352340 A rare and well provenanced Neolithic pounder tool, uncovered in Scandinavia and dating to approximately 3000 - 2000 BC. The heavy, round granite pounder worn by time and use, with old collection label (as shown). This tool dates to the north-west European Neolithic (around 3000-2000 BC), the period when societies across northern Europe began to adopt agriculture. The magnitude of the changes during this era cannot be overstated. The transition from hunter-gatherer societies towards a more sedentary, farm-oriented existence is one of the most critical moments in human history, ultimately enabling the rise of civilization. As an implement used for the grinding of cereals, though simple, this fascinating artefact bears witness to a critical point in the human journey. Diameter: 2 inches. Condition: Good, restored from two large fragments, old collection label attached. Provenance: An extremely well provenanced piece, from the collection of James Curle (1862-1944) of Melrose, Scotland, and thence by descent. Although a lawyer by profession, Curle was an accomplished amateur archaeologist and his name remains one of the most famous in the field of Romano-British Archaeology, having excavated and published extensively in the early 1900's. From 1888-1903 Curle acquired the most magnificent collection of Nordic antiquities outside Scandinavia, eventually selling most of his pieces to the British Museum in 1921. The Curle collection in the British Museum has been the subject of numerous publications and remains an important reference point for scholars of prehistoric Nordic artefacts. ArtAncient Ltd. is pleased to have acquired almost all the remaining pieces from the Curle collection, unsold in 1921, retained by his family and with a provenance dating back almost a century. For a full biography of the man, see an impressive piece in the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 2002.
