Scalloped edge, 3/3/ rectangular holes. See The Medieval Horse and its Equipment, p.86 for a discussion of this type. These shoes were mounted with "fiddle key" nails of which one remains. Their protruding heads were the contact surface and in fact the horse walked on the nail heads and calkins. This example has calkins to both terminals, one folded and one with a reverse fold. The work cited above discussed four forms of calkin configuration, but does not mention a reverse fold. Excellent excavated condition.
