Seller: artancientltd (9,398) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 291218739461 A large early Anglo-Saxon gilt bronze saucer brooch, dating to 450 – 550 AD. This remarkable artefact dates to a period when the British Isles slipped back into the mists of prehistory. As the Roman Empire fragmented, the native Romano-British were left at the mercy of Germanic settlers from the continent. One of the last textual sources of the period is known as the Groans of the Britons, a final appeal made by the Britons to the Roman military for assistance against the barbarian invasion: The barbarians drive us to the sea, the sea drives us to the barbarians; between these two means of death, we are either killed or drowned. After this desperate plea, there is silence, only physical remnants such as this brooch pick up the tale. Chip-carved in the style of the early settlers, it speaks in the voice of England's pagan past. The image appears to show crested serpents circling around, or perhaps the swirls and froths of a stormy sea, like the waters crossed by the invaders to reach the British shores. Diameter: 1 3/4 inches. Condition: Very good, pin missing. Unrestored. Provenance: Unearthed in Hampshire, southern England in early 2013. Subsequently recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme, please follow this link to the see the record of the artefact.
