Seller: artancientltd (9,300) 99.6%, Location: Huntingdon, Ships to: Americas, Europe, Asia, AU, Item: 291041898219 A wonderful, decorative and rare terracotta figure of a late Yuan to early Ming Dynasty wrestler, dating to the 14th - 15th century. This depiction is one of a heavily built foreign wrestler standing on a short base. With a cloth slung casually across the shoulder, he wears long breeches tied by a long belt and a felt hat common to the Mongolic tribes of central Asia. Wearing a whispy beard, the eyes and lips have been finely painted in red and black, adding further lifelike character to the piece. The stocky, strong physique is well suited to the robust style of late Yuan ceramic figures, yet the distinctive sculptural modeling of the head and neck is common to later Ming Dynasty figures Depictions of wrestlers in this distinctive style are not only visually striking, but also highly rare and unusual. This artefact is an arresting example of Ming Dynasty ming-ch'i art, a style well regarded for its high technical and artistic standards, realism in depicting the human form and use of rich pigments. Joined by other pottery figures, this piece would have been intended to accompany an eminent individual into the afterlife, demonstrating their wealth and importance in both the world of the living and the dead. An imposing, decorative and rare example of medieval Chinese figurative art. Condition: Good. Reattached at feet, head is separate as is common with Ming figural ceramics. Otherwise in excellent condition. Height: 11 3/4 inches. Provenance: From an Important NY private collection, purchased at Christie's 13th May 2004.
