Antique Dutch Silver Spoon ***Maker: Gerardus Schoorl*** ***Impressive 3D Figural Ship*** ***55.6 Grams Solid .833 Silver*** Wow.  This antique, silver, sifter-spoon is a late-Victorian Dutch-made figural spoon, albeit a particularly large and well made example. Many such spoons were made and sold over the years as they have always been popular tourist souvenirs in Holland. The overall appearance of the spoon is impressive! At top is an impressive three masted sailing ship at full sail complete with portholes, pennants and flags. The pierced bowl of the spoon features the arms of the city of Amsterdam surrounded by lovely trailing vines and flowers. Connecting the two is a beautiful serpentine stem. The spoon measures 6⅝" in length and 2½" wide at its widest point. The spoon weighs an impressive 55.6 grams of solid .833 silver. That makes this an unusually large example of the classic Dutch figural spoon. The spoon is well-hallmarked as follows: in the bowl is a passant lion hall mark with the numeral "2"  below, which indicates a minimum silver purity of 833/1000. Also in the bowl, and partially over the passant lion mark is a key mark which indicates that the piece was intended for export. Another mark in the bowl is a calligraphy-style letter "N" which indicates a manufacture date of 1897. On the back of the rear-most flag of the ship is a duty mark with the letter A on the cap, which indicates that the Amsterdam assay office passed this particular piece. In addition to those marks, there are two additional marks which are both on the serpentine stem. The first appears to be a pine cone, which I haven't been able to definitively identify. In addition, there is another mark on the stem. It appears to be "7s", but is actually partially obscured and is the maker's mark belonging to Gerardus Schoorl. If fully struck it would read "G7S". Listed here for a reasonable price considering its beauty and uniqueness, this spoon is sure to be appreciated for many generations to come!
