Authentic Antique Floral Victorian Silk Chantilly Lace Shawl Long Wide Excellent

Description: This listing is for an excellent antique mid-1800’s silk Chantilly lace scarf or wrap. These floral Chantilly lace mantillas or shawls were very popular in the mid to late 1800’s, and this one is huge – long and wide – a truly unique shape within the gorgeous examples of the period. Close examination shows that this piece may be hand-woven bobbin lace, with a caveat that it is historically quite difficult to compare hand- to machine-made Chantilly lace. The silk wrap is heavy with all different styles of flowers – tulips, water lilies, daisies, bleeding hearts, and chrysanthemums, to name some. There are also some rounded figures that may be berries or pods of some kind. Ferns are also woven into the design. It seems the more you examine this fine shawl, the more elements are found! All edges of the shawl are scalloped, with tiny picots running the perimeter of the scarf. This is a beautiful, original example of the beloved shawls Victorian women wore throughout the 19th century – and not just for mourning! The length is impressive, an unusually long piece of history that is still quite wearable. This lovely piece is perfect for the collector, a museum, the film industry, those who Cosplay, for home decoration, on display – or wherever your imagination takes you.

Background: Chantilly lace is a handmade bobbin lace named after the city of Chantilly, France, in a tradition dating from the 17th century. Chantilly lace is known for its fine ground, outlined pattern, and abundant detail. The pattern is outlined in cordonnet, a flat untwisted strand. The best Chantilly laces were made of silk, and were generally black, which made them suitable for mourning wear. White Chantilly lace was also made, both in linen and silk, though most Chantilly laces were made of silk. The black silk Chantilly lace became especially popular, and there was a large market for it in Spain and the Americas. Chantilly and the Spanish laces (such as blonde lace) were the most popular black laces. Very little white Chantilly lace was ever made. Another notable thing about Chantilly lace is the use of a half-and-whole stitch as a fill to achieve the effect of light and shadow in the pattern, which was generally of flowers. The lace was produced in strips approximately four inches wide, and then joined with a stitch that left no visible seam. Chantilly lace remained popular in the 19th century, when every fashionable lady had a black or white Chantilly shawl, made in Brussels or Ghent.

Approximate Measurements: Width 28 inches (2’ 4”); Length 90” (7’ 6”) .

Condition: Excellent antique condition. An extraordinary example of 1800’s opulence.

One Moon Mercantile is my small home-based business, and I offer the highest quality of items available, with auctions beginning at the most reasonable price possible. I take pride in accurate descriptions, quick communications, swift shipping, and honest postage costs. I treat every customer as if I am the buyer and rest assured, I will treat you honestly and with respect. All I ask is that you do the same in return. I urge you to ask any questions you may have in advance of bidding on my items. When you do bid on an item, you are agreeing to the following conditions:

·          Do not ask me to end an item early. In respect to other eBayers who may want to bid on the item, I will not end an item early.

·          Bidding on any of my items listed as antique, vintage or collectible are considered used and will not be 'brand new' (unless specified). Due to the unique condition of each item, I have a ‘no return’ policy. Please keep this in mind when you bid.

·          By placing a winning bid, you have agreed to purchase the item offered.

·          Payment is due within three days of auction end. If you need longer to pay, simply let me know. Items will be shipped within one or two days once payment is confirmed and funds are received.

·          There are very rare occasions which I may need to cancel an auction which has an error … even if the auction has ended. In the case of the latter, a refund will immediately be credited to you.

·          Shipping costs are reflective of the actual weight of the item up for bid, and include the approximate weight of the box/envelope and any packing materials needed to assure safe delivery to you. I always reimburse you for any postage overage. Any time the postage costs more than I quote, I pay the difference. The default postage is Priority Mail, but you will always have the option to choose Parcel Select or First Class Mail. Ephemera will be shipped via Media Mail when appropriate. I will combine shipping to keep your postage costs low; let me know if you have won several items within a three-day period, or if you are planning on bidding on another of my items ending later.

·          International bidders: I will not post this item as a 'gift.' I want the eBay experience to be fair and ethical as possible for both of us.

·          Winning bidders are required to pay all appropriate customs and taxes.

·         Any manufacturer's original warranty or guarantee on an antique or vintage article which is part of the item’s history (such as an original tag, wording on a box, etc.) is void on any item I sell.
