Seller: carmel-by-the-sea (134) 100%, Location: Carmel by the Sea, California, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 171989053949 4th-8th Century - Byzantine/Roman Empire Head with Cross - exceedingly rare Condition: In tact, good condition. Approx dimensions: 8.25” H with base. 4" H head. Fairly heavy. Very cool monk/missionary of the Byzantine Empire era... The head dress is typical of the early Byzantine period. The top side of the hat has a spiral design - which is a bit curious. It could be a turban. The stand is secured to the head through a metal rod. It's some sort of sedimentary rock that was carved. I think it's either limestone or sandstone. The carving marks/scores were likely painted giving the figure some depth. History: This was made after Constantine made non-Christian idols a crime. Any other idol was destroyed or modified. Thousands of ancient Greek and Roman idols were destroyed. The only surviving ones were buried or hidden away. The large marble busts were either destroyed or they carved crosses into the foreheads. This bust is an example of what was permitted. I have not found another example. This is so rare, most museums do not have an example. While the NYC Metropolitan Museum has at least one of my other pieces, they do not have this one. This was acquired in Israel in the 60s/70s where it was previously on display at a museum. It was legally imported and has been part of a private Silicon Valley collection since. I'm selling many of my antiquities, antiques, and collectibles. A museum sticker is on the bottom of the stand. It sits on my desk and it is always a topic of conversation. Terms and Conditions: Due to the value of this item, I will only accept wire transfer or bank check. I will ship this item to a reputable antique dealer in your area. You can then pick it up from the antique dealer once he/she signed off on its condition. This is done to ensure you are happy with the piece and it also protects me from fraud.
