Provenance: Ex Richard and Edith Dunlap Collection Peru, Chimu, c. 1000 – 1470 AD. This crisply molded blackware vessel is 4.75" high, slip painted black and buff remnants, some burnishing, fired with some sporadic areas of flash causing black-gray marks. Decorated jar has a bird face on its rim with a short, down-curved beak (like a parrot), and a flat, strap-like handle from the body to the neck. These blackware jars were mould-made and fired to that black color using a method called reduction firing. These were produced in specialty workshops by trained artisans; depicted is an anthropomorphic figure of a bird. The animal is molded in high relief and draped across the spout, neck and body of the vessel. Great example, with highly burnished slip and good mineral deposits. Condition: Trace mineral deposits across the vessel, the vessel chamber is intact, the spout rim is chipped in sporadic areas.
