Calyx Porcelain and Paint Company started production in 1921 from a factory in Subiaco, Western Australia. In the beginning, skilled craftsmen were brought from the UK.  They used locally sourced raw materials; clay from Goomalling and Kalamunda, sand from Lake Gnangara and feldspar from Coolgardie and began producing a wide range of earthenware and china. In the early days of manufacture, cattle bone from an abattoir near Cockburn Sound was carted in an open truck to the factory. On arrival the bones were immediately calcined (fired) in the bottle kilns or else the stench of the remnants of meat on the bones became unbearable. Once fired the bones were crushed to a fine powder for bone china products which had extra whiteness and translucency. Many challenges led the company into voluntary liquidation in 1925 and becoming an asset of the WA Government in early 1926. A Federal Govt contract was secured for the supply of electrical insulators Australia wide in the 1930's.  A number of shapes and sizes were called for, the need for ceramic insulators had ceased by the late 50's. There were several changes of directors in the following years and the business went through plenty of ups and downs. In 1941, Mr HL Brisbane wrote to the WA Ministry for Industries suggesting that his firm, HL Brisbane and Wunderlich Ltd, take an option for the purchase of the works. They first leased and then purchased the Calyx Porcelain Works in 1945, changing the name of the business to Bristile China. By this time there were multiple factories based around Perth making different products - tiles in Caversham, earthenware pipes in Belmont, refractory and architecture bricks in East Perth, building bricks in Cardup and fancy ware in Subiaco. The company used the name Bristile, but to avoid confusion with the name of their baked clay building materials, the fancy and tableware items were marked with the trademark Wembley Ware. To avoid taxes imposed on luxury goods in the post war period, Wembley Ware’s highly crafted, lustred and decorated pieces also had a practical use being ashtrays, vases, kitchen ware, bookends, shaving mugs and card holders. By 1961 the Wembley Ware trademark ceased to be used and the Bristile mark was used on all products. With the focus on tableware in the early 60's, bone china was discontinued and a whiter body achieved by the adding of whiter clay, imported from the UK, to the Goomalling clay - the cost of the clay body increased dramatically with this change. However, this opened up a new market providing crockery to hotels, restaurants and various Government organisations and departments. These items were often decorated with the emblems and logos of the customers. They were sometimes marked ‘vitrified’ meaning a harder wearing ceramic. In 1984 building of a new Office and Showroom was commenced on the Subiaco site. 1992 saw ownership of the parent company changed to Futuris Ltd and the trade name changed to Australian Fine China.  However, time was running out for this historical Western Australian pottery and in 2006, after 85 years, production was moved offshore to China. The kilns and factories in the suburb of Subiaco were demolished in 2006; making way for new residential and commercial buildings in an area now known as China Green. There are tributes to the area’s origins in sculptures representing ceramic plates and factory workings, information plaques, and glass-covered photos of the original factory and processing areas.
