(They say that both gnomes and trolls are skilled in iron forge work) Two owners ago they were found in a New Westminster heritage home the property of a discerning prolific stained glass window collector. These are old and have great character. If they're not antiques yet (100 yrs) then they likely will be soon. The lead is thick and industrial strength. These were built to last in a formidable environment -- whatever that was. There are 5 different colours and 6 types of glass, crafted together in the shape of a sunrise in each window. Each colour has a different degree of ripple with the green colour having two different degrees of ripple for upper and lower ray panels. The least degree of ripple is found in the clear glass, then the upper green rays, the red, the lower green, and the blue is quite bumpy. The photos of the morning sun shining through the glass are a little disappointing because the camera, faced with all that sunlight, darkens the image. The actual affect of the sunlight shining through is more beautifully radiant. The primary colour of the frame is brown, so they'll match almost any décor. They're very heavy and measure 20.5 inches by 12.5 inches. The frames have 2 holes drilled in both the top and bottom so they can be suspended either way up. It looks like a sunrise to me but upside-down it could be viewed as the sunshine providing a path to enlightenment. Each cast iron window frame comes with a different unusual appendage. Some of these may have once served as strange iron hinges. One frame has a pair of gnarly spiraled Unicorn horns (screws), one protruding on an angle from the top and the other nearby from the side. They're somewhat sharp, but also somewhat rounded with time, and look bizarrely cool. Being near the top they pose little danger when suspended.Cleanly, expertly and asymmetrically hacked from wherever they first glowed the frames have been painted at least twice to cover notable, great-looking, character-inducing rusting and pitting. The flatter side (not recessed) appears to have faced the weather outward and is bumpy here and there. These windows have seen some stuff. The original paint was white and the more recent paint is brown. Both paints show traces and spatters on both the lead and the glass. I'm inclined to want to remove all these with paint thinner and a Q-tip but my wife says to heed the words of The Antiques Roadshow and, if you're not certain, leave it alone. Every little trace tells their story. Their genuine age is unmistakable and there's no doubt that the grouping is one-of-a-kind.I would have probably painted the windows black - the original colour of cast iron. Given that they're painted anyway an artist could conceivably add their own flourish to the paint work, perhaps in turquoise, adding their own touch to the mysterious window history. They were originally suspended from "S" hooks on short chains. All but one of these hooks survived transit to my home and they're yours with this purchase. The most significant damage is a difficult-to-see lower small yellow corner panel. It looks like dropping the window on its appendage may have caused the little cracked panel. It happened a long time ago and the pieces are tight -- not loose. It's part of what makes these windows so very 'real'. Primarily for this reason, but also because of their obvious, age-appropriate seasoned wear, they're being sold 'As Is'.If you're an artist, designer, oddity collector and/or are a fan of unique original Art Deco Industrial Art then these are the perfect windows for you. Very Funky they're ideal too for Steam Punk decor. You'll never have another opportunity to buy them again! Buy Them Now!
