Three boys have been tricked by an evil innkeeper or butcher and have been thrown into a barrel, shown on the bottom left of the badge. St. Nicholas, on visiting the inn, dreams of the crime and resurrects the boys, who are shown alive again on the bottom right. St. Nicholas himself occupies the upper element of the badge with an inscription surrounding him. This is one of the finest pilgrim badges, showing this important saint, that we have seen on the market. It would have been worn as an act of devotion and flung into the river Seine near Paris in the 14th-15th Century as an act of piety. Height: 1 3/4 inches. 4 inches mounted.Condition: Very good, with no restorations. Mounted on a bespoke hardwood base, as shown. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Mr. Arthur Forgeais (1822-1878). Forgeais owned a shop on the Pont Neuf in Paris during the 1860s. It was during this period that the Parisian authorities undertook a project of dredging the Seine, as a result a number of these badges were recovered from the silt. It was Mr. Forgeais who recognised their importance and saw to their publication in a series of volumes, which he had printed at his own expense in 1862-5. In many senses he was the founder of the modern study of medieval pilgrim’s badges and ampullae. This piece was one of a number recovered from the Seine which Mr. Forgeais retained for his own collection.
