Item:325976193709vintage guatemalan ceremonial huipil Xela (Quetzaltenango) hand woven ca. 1970s. This fine example of traditional weaving was purchased from an antique store (4 Ahau) in Guatemala City in 1993. I was in country for a medical mission. Xela is from the Quiche Mayan name of the city (Xelahu), also known as Quetzaltenango. The indigenous people speak either the Quiche (K'iche) or Mam dialects. The elaborate pattern at the neck, with a male and female figure, is common to the matrimonial or ceremonial Huipil, as are the brilliant yellow flowers and green stem along the body of the garment.
