Hagen-Renaker was one of dozens of California ceramic manufacturers in the late 1940s and 1950s who specialized in molded porcelain figures, knickknacks, and household accessories. In addition to John and Maxine, company designers included Nell Bortells, Maureen Love Calvert, Helen Perrin Farnlund, Joe Griffith, Tom Masterson, Bill Mintzer, and Bill Nicely. The “Holy Cow” figurine was the company’s first success. A Disney license was obtained in 1955. In 1958, the Little Horribles line was introduced.
After closing for a year between 1960-1961 because of Japanese competition Hagen-Renaker reorganized. In 1962, the company’s miniature line flourished. Two million pieces were produced in 1967. John and Maxine’s daughter Susan Nikas became the head of the company.
Susan Renaker Nikas the founders daughter passed in June of 2022.
