For many the word “Indo-European” conjures up an image of horse-riding warriors sweeping out of Asia, spreading their languages and culture with each clash of the sword. Certainly linguistic history shows that most of the peoples of Europe, Irans, and India share a common ancient language known today as Proto-Indo-European. Celts and Germans, Italians and Greeks, Albanians, Slavs, Indians and many people long extinct can all have their linguistic ancestry traced back to this mother tongue. But how far does the story told by languages match the historical and archaeological record? What do we know about the lives and beliefs of these early indo-Europeans? And where was their original homeland? In search of the Indo-Europeans is the first full synthesis of all the evidence to be published for a generation. With the skill of a forensic scientist, Dr. Mallory traces the immediate origins of each of the Indo-European peoples of Europe and Asia. By comparing their languages he demonstrates their common cultural heritage, and through the technique of comparative mythology he examines their earliest beliefs. Then, in what is the climax of the book, he puts the case for their most likely homeland and presents the archaeological and linguistic evidence for their expansion across Europe and Asia, a process that has in recent times carried Indo-European speakers to every corner of the world. “In Search of the Indo-Europeans” is ultimately, the story of the human race. The book concludes with an analysis of the role played by Indo-European studies in the creation of the myth of Aryan supremacy and contrasts this with the true legacy of the Indo-European peoples. Accompanied by extensive quotations from translated texts and fully illustrated with maps, diagrams and photographs, “In Search of the Indo-Europeans” is sure to be recognized as the standard work in its field. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Partly read hardcover with dustjacket (288 pages) Thames & Hudson (1988). Original owner appears to have read perhaps the first third of the book (perhaps to page 95). From the inside pages are clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound. HOWEVER I would add that the surfaces opf the closed page edges do have a few small, light tan colored spots/stains (known as "foxing"). These few faint spots (to the fore and bottom closed page edges, also known as the "page block") are visible only when book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges. Red cloth covers are clean and unworn. Dustjacket is very clean, with only very faint edge and corner shelfwear, but no tears or chips. Full cloth covers are absolutely unblemished. This is a very difficult book for find in hardcover, particularly a copy which is not ex-library, and especially in this exceptionally good condition. Satisfaction unconditionally guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. No disappointments, no excuses. PROMPT SHIPPING! HEAVILY PADDED, DAMAGE-FREE PACKAGING! #945a. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: With the skill of a forensic scientist, Dr. Mallory traces the immediate origins of each of the Indo-European peoples of Europe and Asia. By comparing their languages he demonstrates their common cultural heritage, and through the technique of comparative mythology he examines their earliest beliefs. PROFESSIONAL REVIEW: REVIEW: According to British linguist J.P. Mallory, the Indo-European language is the proto-type of the languages spoken by over 2 billion people today. He also says the Indo-Europeans should not be confused with the `Aryans' claimed to be the progenitors of the Third Reich. Mallory suggests the Indo-Europeans appear to have been a pastoral nomadic group who lived in the Pontic-Caspian region (Steppes of Mother Russia) sometime between the second and fifth millenium BC from whence they diffused. Mallory employs what paleolinguistics to show how several dozen modern languages are descended from a `Proto Indo-European' mother tongue that came to dominate many other languages (not all) of the European-Asian land mass. He uses the work of archeologists to support of his theory. Mallory suggests paleolinguistics supports the idea that the languages of Europe and Asia which resemble each other did not spring up independently of one another and it is not likely that the civilizations that sustained them did either. Mallory theorizes the diffusion of the proto Indo-Euopean language from a Pontic-Caspian homeland took three paths, one through Anatolia and the Balkans, one through Northern Europe, and one East toward Iran and India. He also suggests that the diffusion may have in part been the result of internal changes such as excessive population growth and climatic change that made agriculture a losing proposition. The social change resulting from the adaptation of more successful strategies for survival, such as pastoral nomadism may have led to a greater acceptance of the people who brought it about and their language. Whatever brought about the change, Indo-European languages exist from Ireland to India today. Mallory's arguments on behalf of his thesis are clear and compelling. He methodically builds his case using the work of many scholars from both the East and the West. READER REVIEWS: REVIEW: With scattered exceptions, all European languages, as well as the languages of North India and Persia, show much common ground, not only in terms of vocabulary similarities (pater/father/Vater/etc.) but also the declension of nouns and the conjugation of verbs. For over 200 years, linguists have attempted to explain how these separate languages split off from each other. The baseline is the hypothesis that all speakers of this language group began with a common language, reconstructed as Proto Indo European to about 6000 BCE. Once we get to that point, then the question becomes, who were these people and where did they come from? The book summarizes a very large literature with remarkable fairness. The earlier parts of the book concerning the linguistic aspects are probably the most direct for the person who comes to this topic for the first time. This is the best beginning survey I know to the subject because it approaches the problem as a problem of historical reconstruction, and shows the growth of the linguistic understanding also from a historical point of view. Hence it can be quite fascinating and even exciting. REVIEW: Indo-European studies was adversely affected by the Nazi endorsement of Aryan studies. Only recently has this field of study started to truly recover from this setback. It is **not** race-theory, but language theory and related folk-movements that most affect the core of the discipline. This is the best book written on the topic for a general reader. The common origins for the peoples of Europe, Iran, India is something that anyone wishes to have a good understanding of history needs to understand. Many of the particulars of history are still obscure, even to the experts of the field, but the relations between these peoples all go back in the recesses of ancient history. Indo-European studies can be seen as an attempt to push things back further into the past by studying out languages. Sanskrit and Latin have a common source…where was that common source, and who were they? All in all, this is a good book and I like it. I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). The shipment will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher. Most international orders cost an additional $12.99 to $33.99 for an insuredshipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the economies of combined shipping/insurance costs. Your purchase will ordinarily be shipped within 48 hours of payment. We package as well as anyone in the business, with lots of protective padding and containers. Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world – but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
