Seller: orgwood (1,205) 100%, Location: Saint Paul, Minnesota, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 291445163231 If you are knowledgeable about investment lost wax casting you know what you're looking at. If not, I will try to give a brief tutorial. These molds are used to inject molten wax to make a positive image of the actual part you're planning to cast. The wax model is surrounded by a ceramic type material in a liquid form and then fired gently to melt and remove the wax. It is then fired at a high enough temperature to fuse the material into a vacant mold in which the molten metal is eventually poured. This process is normally done in a foundry but the same process can be used in small operations to make jewelry, teeth, etc. These molds are used and are considered semi-rigid because the aluminum shells are filled with an epoxy that has cured to take the image of the object to be cast. They are engineered for a pressure wax injection system to speed up production because the wax has to cool before the mold is opened and the wax is removed hopefully with no voids. Some changes to the part can be made in the wax form such as the cutting off of the finials, etc. although there is a separate mold for the loose hinge pin finals tops for both types of hinges. The hinge pin hole is produced with a ceramic rod that is etched or drilled out after casting as it's difficult to align the holes with a drill bit which is actually quite flexible over large distances. I have included photos of vintage hinges that are NOT the exact ones that these molds produce but are for reference to show what these types molds can produce when both hinge halves are mated complete with hinge pins. These molds produce 3 knuckle hinges that are slightly less than 4" x 4"- one half is a 2 knuckle and the other is a 1 center knuckle. There should be many hundreds more injections possible from these and probably several thousand but there is no warranty, of course. Careful handling of the molds is essential to preserving their life span. I have also included pictures of some other molds that can be offered for sale if you want to buy a more of them for production purposes. These are NOT included in this listing. I am considering retaining the molds and selling the waxes they produce so someone with the foundry connections can make their own hinges without having to have the equipment for the wax making. If you have any other questions or you'd be interested in this type of arrangement, please send me a message. Material: aluminum block with epoxy infill
