INVENTORY SALE - REDUCED FROM $1,399.99 - GREAT VALUE Khmer Pre Angkor Sandstone Head of Vishnu 'Hara', Phnom Da Style, 9/10th C. Description: A masterpiece of ancient Khmer art - a Hindu Male Deity "Hara" the indic deity of creation, commonly known as Vishnu, who was prominent in Pre-Angkorian Cambodia. The fragment is one of the earliest examples of sculptural art produced during the Phnom Da period in Pre Angkorian times, and is specifically characterized by its distinct features.xxxxx The almond-shaped eyes with incised iris, delicately traced brows, and subtly molded lips and nose, have particularity of portraiture, an individualized treatment of the Phnom Da style, that represents the royal patron who commissioned the sculpture.xxxxx The deity's head-covering is of Indian origin, consisting of a plain cylindrical Mitre-type hat (the attribute of Vishnu) symbolizing the deity's exalted status. The mitre comes all the way down to the nap of the neck, and wraps his unadorned elongated earlobes, framing the face. Phnom Da is a temple mountain, about 100 metres tall and an excavation area, located in the southeast of Cambodia, close to the Vietnamese border. It belongs to the Angkor Borei district in Takeo province. Phnom Da is the name used to describe the first art style period in the Pre-Angkorian era, and continued to play an important role in the following two centuries. Originally chiseled as a full figured image, this fragmented portion is an exquisite example, unaltered, with no condition issues, with the exception of inconspicuous surface abrasions. The piece reveals a well weathered and worn surface, with a naturally aged rich brown patina of molted varieations, showing minor surface degradation, and clear evidence of selective erosion that developes after extended exposure to the elements over time. Data Observation: Excellent Condition, with the exception of small surface abrasions as shown. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item.
