Once filled with the produce of the Classical world, it has been transformed into a magnificent marine sculpture. On close inspection the handle of another amphora, presumably having fallen in the same place on the sea bed, is fused onto this vessel by numerous marine deposits. A beautifully presented piece. Diameter: 18 1/2 inchesHeight: 25 1/2 inchesCondition: Excellent, restored from approximately 2-3 fragments. Covered in beautiful marine encrustations. Close inspection reveals the cross section of the handle of another amphora, fused to the neck. Beautifully mounted on a bronze base.Provenance:Reputedly salvaged by the famous explorer, Jacques Cousteau, in the 1970s and given to one of his diving partners.
