I present for your consideration a rare hand made unsigned Ike Wilson ashtray (previously thought of as Austin Wilson, a separate person), made of sterling silver, entirely hand stamped and hand constructed. Wilson was represented in Adair and the CG Wallace catalog for Sotheby's auction and his work is very highly prized. He is most noted for work like that on this cigar and cigarette ashtray: hand stamping of exceptional beauty. The stamp in the center of this piece is one of his most famous prototypical stamps, related to the tobacco plant. Observe the variety of stamps used, all perfectly executed and finely detailed.  Look at the gorgeous construction of the feet and the file marks you can see on the scalloped edges. This is a superb example and of great collectible value. Wilson's work is quite rare outside the museums and best collections.  I had a pin which had the same stamp and was signed by him and now is in a private collection. Right now, I have in my store a matching ring which is signed with his known extended bow and arrow hallmark and which is absolutely the same work and uses the same central stamp as this ashtray. I'm so excited to have both pieces and will be glad to help you to purchase both so they can be together in one collection. I've included two pictures of the ring above and it is available separately.

Wilson was particularly interested in tobacco, which was and still is used in Navajo ceremonials for both healing and purification. The burning of tobacco is part of the most sacred Navajo ceremonials. So his making an ashtray like this and putting the tobacco blossom in a central place is very meaningful. It doesn’t mean what it means to the current, non Native American culture at all, but has a sacred and central meaning,

This piece is unsigned and not marked for silver content which is usual for that period of time but it's Ike (previously called Austin) Wilson's work and it's at least coin silver at .900 or sterling silver at .925. It is in wonderful, superb, vintage, and collectible condition.

Wilson became very famous, worked for CG Wallace, was represented in the Sotheby's auction catalog and was always renowned, prize winning, and his work very highly valued. He lived from 1901 to 1942 and began to win prizes in inter tribal Gallup by the 1930s. He was also featured as a very successful silversmith in Adair's book "The Navajo and Pueblo Silvermiths." He was referred to as Ike Wilson but there was confusion in great part due to Barton Wright's books which referred to his hallmark as Austin Wilson's. This mistake was perpetuated by all ll the books; sloppy research to copy from previous authors without double checking. Now, one of the authors has updated and corrected. To underscore the point the artist who was known as Austin Wilson and used the extended bow and arrow hallmark, was a great artist and made and signed the ring with his many times confirmed hallmark and used the same tobacco plant stamp centrally in the ring as it is used in this ashtray.  His actual name was Ike Wilson, not Austin Wilson.

I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
