On offer is an exceptionally well preserved "Newton's Improved Pocket Celestial Globe".
The globe has a diameter of 83mm, it consists of two lightly coloured hollow hemispheres made up of twelve hand painted gores. The hemispheres are connected by a hinge and can be locked by two hook-and-eye clasps, all of which are in perfect working order.
The globe originally had a counterpart pocket terrestrial globe, which would've sat inside it. It is a collectible globe in its own right, and could have been used to read the stars.
The exterior of the globe is a high quality black shagreen, with limited wear. The brass hinge and hooks are visible from the exterior, as is a hint of the red paint that covers the lip of the globe.
The interior of the globe bears beautiful celestial cartography by which one could map the stars. The lip of the paper mâché globe is painted red. Further, there is a small cartouche imprinted on the pattern bearing the words 'NEWTON'S Improved Pocket CELESTIAL GLOBE.'
This item, since its production in London, England, circa 1830, made its way to Brisbane - this is where I acquired it.
