Seller: karitasinomnia (531) 100%, Location: Toronto, Ontario, Ships to: CA, US, AU, GB, Item: 182339702739 CARA JORDAN PYROGRAPHY Offered here for sale is an ORIGINAL pyrography (literally writing with fire) or woodburning drawing of a Roman general on a piece of watercolour paper. This piece is really much nicer than the picture. It is signed and dated on the back and sprayed with a final fixative. The size is 10 by 8 inches. This piece was used as an illustration in my new book, Amores: Essential Latin Love Poetry, available in my ebay store as well as on Kindle and Amazon (ebook). Artist's StatementLike a phoenix rising from the ashes, the art of pyrography involves creation through fire. Pyrography, from the Greek 'drawing with fire,' is achieved by burning images onto a variety of surfaces. Often called woodburning, because wood is the most common surface used, paper, tagua nut, leather, and bone are also conducive to using heat to create this type of art. Images from the natural world are easily born from wood and other organic materials. Fur, feathers, and scales can be created using the texture of the burn that engraves the images into the wood, and the warm tones of a lion's mane or an eagle's feather are brought to life in warm sepia tones. This beautiful drawing technique allows you to combine line, colour, and texture to create any images from the natural world or your imagination. Although pyrography has been practiced since ancient times, it became increasingly popular with ladies in the Victorian period for decorating all manner of household objects. Once seen merely as a craft, pyrography is being increasingly recognised as a fine art form. Although I have no formal training, I have been creating and selling my art for more than ten years. When I was a little girl, I was always inspired by a visit to my grandfather's workshop, a little red barn in the country. He was a folk artist who worked in wood to create animal sculptures and images of life in rural Canada. Recently, I have become interested in pyrography since wood is the perfect canvas for images inspired by the diversity and grandeur of nature and wildlife from Canada and around the world. I use my own photographs of animals as inspiration for pieces that speak to the beauty, majesty, humanity, and souls of all creatures, great and small, that enrich and sustain our world. All wood pieces are finished with UV resistant non-yellowing waterbased polyurethane. Each piece comes with a description, picture, and artist's statement. Commissioned pieces can be done upon request in a variety of sizes. Honours and AwardsI have received awards from the Buckhorn Art Festival, Canada's Capital Carving Competition, Canadian Woodcarving Championship, Magic in Wood Competition, and the Kawartha Carving Competition. One of my woodburned paddles, Canoe Spirits, is on display at the Canadian Canoe Museum.
