Description: This elaborately-bound, lavishly illustrated antique book is a pictorial description of a trip to Palestine in the year 1873. It features many beautiful illustrations of places and sites whose names we have come to recognize through the Bible and the sacred books of other religions, such as Judaism and Islam. The author, Reverend Samuel Manning, was determined to prove the Bible’s accuracy by comparing the actual topography of the Holy Land with written accounts in the Scriptures. His expedition did not end in disappointment. “Had any doubt existed in his own mind as to the veracity of those histories, it must have been dispelled by the minute agreement which he traced between the indications of the Bible and the physical geography of the country,” he writes in the Preface. What Reverend Manning found in the Holy Land, the sights he beheld with his own eyes, are recorded in this book in both narrative and illustrations. “In the illustrations, which form so large a part of the present volume, fidelity rather than artistic effect has been aimed at. Many of the engravings are from drawings made on the spot, but a greater number are from photographs by Messrs. Bergheim and Nicodemus of Jerusalem, and Madame Bonfils of Beyrout.” To give you a better idea of the riches this book contains, I have prepared a summary of the numerous illustrations below. I hope you’ll take a moment to have a look.
