NOTE: We have 75,000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well (some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions). If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with dustjacket (Knopf; 1979) 380 pages. The great Italian city-states: Venice, Florence, Milan, and the others. The particular nature of their history and culture through the five centuries of their emergence, magnificent flowering, and twilight is brilliantly explored in terms of the internal shifts of economic, social, and political power - by violence, by manipulation, by the gradual pressures of changing circumstance. And here are the life and culture and works of imagination that were created as the merchants and guilds wrested dominion from the ancient nobility, from the first struggles against the Holy Roman Empire in the 12th century through the rich cultural blaze and political exhaustion of the 16th century. Martines has drawn together and chronicled in a single fluent narrative all the explosive energies, the social strife, the civil disorder, the political violence, the economic transformations, the crises of control, the religious fervor and corruption, and the spectacular achievements of art and intellect that made and defined the city-states. CONDITION: Unread but cosmetically damaged. Knopf (1979) 380 pages. Book appears to be unread, or read onto to page 8 or 10. However it appears that perhaps a cup of coffee was splashed nearby while the book was open to perhaps page 8 or 10. There's no real "water damage", however the top surface of the closed page edges do show some splash marks (visible of course only when the book is closed, and only to the mass of page edges). Also there are a few small splash stains to the top edge of each page...to the first ten pages of the book. Otherwise the remainder of the pages within the book are absolutely clean, unambiguously unread, unmutilated, unmarked, and tightly bound. Original dustjacket was lost, so we produced a full-color replacement printed on high-gloss photographic quality paper, enclosed in a mylar cover. It's very handsome and durable. Beneath the dustjacket there are also some very faint splash stains to the cloth spine. Except for the light cosmetic blemishes caushed by the liquid splash marks, and the fact that the original dustjacke tis missing, the book is otherwise in "like new" condition. No shelf trophy, that's for sure. But it is a solid reading copy, well bound, and IMHO, much better, more durable, and more sensible than buying a paperback copy. #1255c. PUBLISHER REVIEW: A brilliant study of the political, social and economic sources of the extraordinary explosion of expression in art and scholarship which made Italy the model for Europe. Urbanization from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries; Venice, Florence, Milan, and how they changed world perceptions. PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS: Martinez, Professor of History at UCLA, has drawn together and chronicled in a single fluent narrative all the explosive energies, the social strife, the civic disorder, the political violence, the economic transformations, the crises of control, the religious fervor and corruption, the spectacular achievements of art and intellect that made and defined the city-states. A new look at the political, social and economic sources of the explosion of art and scholarship which made Italy the model for Europe. It is instructive and fascinating. Both historians and general readers will find much to interest them. 368 pages including Notes, Bibliography, and Index. Illustrated in black and white maps and reproductions. The subject of this brilliant book is the great city-states of Italy: Venice, Florence, Milan and the others. It charts their history, culture, life, religion and the imagination that fueled the Renaissance. The book sums up an original analysis of the Renaissance by a UCLA Professor History, whose approach is to show that the achievements of that period were a "reflection of the needs and concerns of the ruling elite." The book is a major historical statement. In its breadth and determination this work can be compared only to Burckhardt’s classic “Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy”, for it begins with the early communes and ends in the late 16th century. It similarly takes all of northern Italy as its realm. Examines the particular nature of the history and culture of the great Italian city-states through the five centuries of their emergence, magnificent flowering, and twilight is explored in terms of the internal shifts of economic, social, and political power-by violence, by manipulation, by the gradual pressures of changing circumstance. “Power and Imagination: City-States in Renaissance Italy” is a provocative study of the political, social, and cultural evolution of the Italian city-states the produced the great burst of innovation known as the Renaissance. It explores the development of the middle class and the transformation of small feudal towns into centers of commerce and culture, showing how rapid urbanization and shifting wealth and population created new social political factions and engendered an explosion of artistic and intellectual expression. Account of the great city-states of Italy: Venice, Florence, Milan and the others. The particular nature of their history and culture through five centuries of their emergence, flowering, and twilight is explored in terms of their internal shifts of economic, social and political power. This study rethinks the evolution of the city-state in Renaissance Italy, recasting the conventional distinction between "society" and "culture". It traces the growth of commerce and the governments as well as exploring the period. READER REVIEWS: This book is perhaps the definitive intellectual work on power relationships within Renaissance Italy. Power and imagination in the City-States formed in a reciprocal relationship. Artistry often reflected what patrons desired more than anything else. Patronage kept the purse and told painters exactly what to paint and even allocated how much of what paint to use. Thus great works of art and intellect not so much reflected the imaginative genius of individuals as the pull from strings of power. The irony is that this gave birth to intellectual freedom. Martinez is a true genius in telling the theoretical as well as practical implications. I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). The shipment will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher. Most international orders cost an additional $12.99 to $33.99 for an insuredshipment in a heavily padded mailer, and typically includes some form of rudimentary tracking and/or delivery confirmation (though for some countries, this is only available at additional cost). There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). Rates and available services vary a bit from country to country. You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal requirements. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA. That’s why all of our shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world – but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
