One arm supports the child’s head; the other its bottom. The mother bears the traditional archaic elongated head, faintly incised eyes, and punctured earrings. The infant is dressed in tight swaddling clothes, with one of the mother’s breasts resting atop its elongated head. The mother’s legs are crossed beneath her. The artifact touchingly conveys the enduring theme of maternal caring and love for a young, helpless child. The piece is 4 inches tall and is absolutely mint—no chips, scratches, or mineral deposits. The filial theme conveyed, the unusual immaculate detail for the Archaic Era, and the superlative condition for such an ancient shaft-grave piece, make it a true museum-like gem. We have seen no Archaic Colima mother and child figure approaching this one in excellence. Comes with custom mount. Excellent provenance: Formerly of the Weisman Collection. Acquired in the 1950s-60s.
