Eucalyptus deglupta, also known as rainbow eucalyptus, is an evergreen tree that hails from the Philippine island of Mindanao. Popular for its ever-changing, multicolored bark, this frost-intolerant tree can be grown in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 9 and higher. Under ideal conditions, which include full sun, plenty of water and well-drained soil, the tree can grow about 200 feet tall. Even though Eucalyptus deglupta can be started from cuttings, starting the tree from seeds can be a rewarding experience.
Preparing the Container
Cleaning and disinfecting the seed-raising tray, prior to sowing the seeds, is essential to eliminate bacteria that can affect plant growth. Soak the tray up to 10 minutes, in a solution of 9 parts water to 1 part household bleach. Afterward, use dish-washing liquid to clean the tray and thoroughly rinse it with water. Fill the seed-raising tray, up to 3/4 inch from the top, with moistened seed-starting mix or equal parts of peat moss and vermiculite.
Sowing the Seeds
Eucalyptus deglupta seeds are shallowly sown -- a 1/16-inch layer of soil is sufficient coverage for the seeds. The soil must remain moist throughout the germination period. This is best done with a water-filled spray bottle because this won't wash away the seeds. Eucalyptus deglupta seeds require a humidity of about 100 percent. Covering the tray with plastic wrap can help raise the humidity level. To promote aeration, make holes in the plastic wrap.
Germination
To germinate the seeds, a shady area and a temperature of about 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit is required. Place a heating mat underneath the seed-raising tray to provide a consistent temperature. Eucalyptus deglupta seeds can germinate within 4 to 20 days. During germination, move the tray to a semishaded area. Once the seeds have germinated, place them in a sunny window or under grow lights. To avoid growing weak seedlings, expose them to a temperature of about 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Seed Counts
All seed counts should be considered estimates. Some of our seeds are estimated by weight. These weights are often based on our supplier weights and/or the weight of the average of several samples of the same seed.We do our best to ensure accuracy and will often add extra seeds. However, all estimates are final .
