Another fine and rare example of the Scottish basket-hilt broad sword dating from the mid 1700s era and used throughout the American revolution period, having a so called "Stirling" school steel basket possibly made by a well known Stirling blacksmith James Grant, having distinctive pierced slots and stars decorations throughout the hilt with also very distinctively shaped and fluted lower loops all showing nice light patina, retaining its original painted black shark skin over wood grip with scarce twist iron wire, grip is bordered by two flat iron ring bands, top one is slightly loose and topped with a flattened mushroom shaped pommel fluted as well as the rest of the hilt features. Mounted with a very cool and possibly earlier broad double edged blade with pierced fullers which is mostly typical to the 17th century blades, both sides of the blade bearing a struck maker's mark almost entirely worn on one side while well preserved on the other, blade exhibits nice clean original steel finish with light patina and features very sharp edges which like on the other examples were lightly tapered over the years to remove battle marks obtained during combats from the impacts with other swords. Guard can be moved a millimeter or two against the blade if force applied otherwise pretty solid. Beautiful Scottish weapon with a very intricate hilt of scarce and seldom encountered pattern.
Overall  37 1/2"
Blade  32 1/4"
