Seller: zorroelgato (1,607) 100%, Location: Magalia, California, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 222329492133 Description "shadows of paradise" I folks, this auction is for a beautiful, Roman/Celtic Ancient Bracelet W/Oghams 1st/6th Century AD...It is > 5 1/2 cm wide >(side to side) Ogham /ˈɒɡəm/[1] (Modern Irish [ˈoːmˠ] or [ˈoːəmˠ]; Old Irish: ogam [ˈɔɣamˠ]) is an Early Medieval alphabet used to write the early Irish language (in the so-called "orthodox" inscriptions, 1st to 6th centuries), and later the Old Irishlanguage (so-called scholastic ogham, 6th to 9th centuries). There are roughly 400 surviving orthodox inscriptions on stone monuments throughout Ireland and western Britain; the bulk of them are in southern Munster.[2] The largest number outside Ireland is in Pembrokeshire in Wales.[3] The vast majority of the inscriptions consist of personal names. According to the High Medieval Bríatharogam, names of various trees can be ascribed to individual letters. The etymology of the word ogam or ogham remains unclear. One possible origin is from the Irish og-úaim 'point-seam', referring to the seam made by the point of a sharp weapon. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~PATINA~ *On the subject of patina, I have had several emails telling and asking me if taking the so-called "patina" off the piece lessens it's value. In my opinion it is not patina but dirt. Patina is found on bronze statues and forms because of their exposure to the air. Almost all of the items I sell and the items like mine on-line, have come out of the ground. They are found either in flint lined safety boxes put into the ground by the original owners or in clumps of dirt if the boxes have broken open, which is the case most of the time. The dirt has to be broken away to even see the items and that is not a patina, but dirt. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. Most sellers do not want to do this with the bronze ( jewelry or coins ) because it is time consuming and hard work with little monetary return for the extra effort. I clean them and I put in the hours to do it ( one ring can take 2 or more hours to clean properly. ) because I feel that they should be seen as their last owners saw them, bright and shiny ( I leave the inner part of the ring as-is on most rings so the new owner can be the first person since the last owner to touch it once the "PATINA" wears-off.). As far as lessening the value, most of these items are less than $100 and in the 16 years I have been selling these items on eBay there has been little change in the price. In the end it is up to you, the buyer, to decide for yourselves if you would rather have a clean or dirty ring (if you would like a dirty ring, please let me know & I will show you a Variety you can choose from.)..
