Hot stone massage is a natural therapy in which warmed stones are positioned on parts of the body to maximise the therapeutic benefit. The stones used are typically river rocks or other very smooth-surfaced stones made of basalt. These stones are heated in sanitising water before use. The high iron content in basalt helps the stones retain heat during the massage. Hot stone massages are beneficial on both physical and psychological levels. Always check with your doctor before getting a hot stone massage; individuals with certain conditions--including pregnant women and people with high blood pressure--are advised to avoid this type of therapy.

How to give Hot Stone Massage

Believed to date back to the ancient Egyptians, hot stone massage is a favourite for thousands of years. Giving hot stone massage at home is not difficult as long as you make sure that the stones do not get too hot. If you can handle them easily then they are probably a good temperature for adult skin. Some people like to use oil and some do not, make your own preference.

Step 1

Place the stones in a saucepan and fill it with water. Then boil it on low heat for at least 30 minutes after the water is warm. The stones should be no hotter than around 50C or they will be too hot to handle and will burn the person you are massaging.

Step 2

Have your person lie face down on a table or bed. They should be naked or wearing thin undergarments. Cover the parts of the body you are not currently massaging with a clean sheet or towel to keep them from getting cold.

Step 3

Place warm stones at the top of the left leg, in the center of the thigh, behind the knee and on the calf. Let them sit for 2 to 3 minutes and then massage that leg. Oil is optional but it will help your hands glide easier. Place warm stones on his right leg, just as you did on his left, while you are massaging his left leg.

Step 4

Take a massage stone and slide it up his left leg slowly, from his heel to his bottom.

Step 5

Massage his right leg, finishing with the stone and the gliding technique.

Step 6

Put one or two stones on each side of his buttocks. Let them sit, and then gently massage the muscles, finishing with circling a warm stone on each cheek slowly.

Step 7

Put warm stones on his neck, shoulders and lower back. Let them sit for 2 to 3 minutes and then massage the large muscles of his back, finishing with the stone gliding technique. Have your subject turn over, and do his front side the same way you did his back.

Warnings

Never put warm stones on someone’s genitals or scalp, because the skin there is more sensitive to heat.

Tips

Massage your subject’s arms with your bare hands, or with a gliding stone, because warm stones usually won’t stay put on someone’s arms.
