This 1952 John Phillip Sousa Composer Topps Look N See Card #115 is the exact item you will receive and has been certified Authentic by REM Fine Collectibles. The 1952 Topps Look ‘n See set consists of 135 cards, each measuring 2-1/16” x 2-7/8”. The set was issued in two series of 75 and 60 cards, respectively. This set has remained one of the most popular post-war, non-sports issues of all time. John Philip Sousa (November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era known primarily for American military marches. He is known as "The March King" or the "American March King", to distinguish him from his British counterpart Kenneth J. Alford.  Among Sousa's best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (National March of the United States of America), "Semper Fidelis" (official march of the United States Marine Corps), "The Liberty Bell", "The Thunderer", and "The Washington Post". Sousa began his career playing violin and studying music theory and composition under John Esputa and George Felix Benkert. Sousa's father enlisted him in the United States Marine Band as an apprentice in 1868. He left the band in 1875, and over the next five years, Sousa performed as a violinist and learned to conduct.  In 1880, he rejoined the Marine Band and served there for 12 years as director, after which Sousa was hired to conduct a band organized by David Blakely, P.S. Gilmore's former agent. Blakely wanted to compete with Gilmore. From 1880 until his death, Sousa focused exclusively on conducting and writing music. He aided in the development of the sousaphone, a large brass instrument similar to the helicon and tuba. Upon the outbreak of World War I, Sousa was awarded a wartime commission of lieutenant commander to lead the Naval Reserve Band in Illinois. He then returned to conduct the Sousa Band until his death in 1932. In the 1920s, Sousa was promoted to the permanent rank of lieutenant commander in the naval reserve. Each cardboard collectible bears a remarkably artistic and colorful “painted” subject portrait within a white border. A white rectangle toward the bottom identifies the world-famous luminary from history; that rectangle is bordered in yellow, with a small icon denoting the respective subset. Card backs are orange with white text detailing the subject’s biography.  Each back also has a shield at the upper left corner identifying the card number, as well as a trivia question. (A red cellophane “decoder” that enabled fans to read the trivia answer accompanied each pack). This diverse set is full of famous explorers, scientists, political leaders, writers, artists, and other notable personalities of American and world history.  Some cards in the collection all originate from the second series and are thought to have been single prints: Rembrandt (#82), Julius Caesar (#84), Roald Amundsen (#88), Adlai Stevenson (#98), Daniel De Foe (#101), John D. Rockefeller (#112), Amerigo Vespucci (#118), Victor Herbert (#130), and Joan of Arc (#133).  Baseball fans are also fond of first-series issue Babe Ruth (#15), the sole athlete featured. Centering and chipping on the back borders are two common condition issues that make it difficult to find Look ‘n See high grade cards.
