Description:

This is a beautifully illustrated, turn-of-the-century armchair excursion through the Scottish nation. Published in the Victorian era, circa 1880, this book features 150 engravings of scenery and landmarks throughout the Highlands, Lowlands and coastal regions of Scotland, transporting the reader into a realm of Celtic history and romance. A land draped in the mists of time and tradition.

The proud history and colorful character of Scotland come to life in these pages. The illustrations are accompanied by engaging text that describes the history and significance of the pictured scenes, guiding the reader from one to the next. Steeped in Scottish lore and local wisdom, it makes for a pleasant, satisfying journey, from start to finish.

This was the great age of railway travel, before the coming of the automobile. And the itinerary follows the leisurely style of the Victorian age: by steamer, train, carriage and foot. The descriptions of scenes and places were written by a small group of enthusiastic travelers, including several clergymen, observant reporters of all they saw. This book is thus based upon the author’s personal experiences, the words complemented by superb 19th-century engravings on almost every page.

In order to give you the most accurate description of this antique volume, I have provided some helpful details below, starting with an summary of the numerous illustrations in the text. Meanwhile, at the bottom of this page you can see some of those fine engravings for yourself.

All of this is provided to help you make an informed decision when bidding. I hope you'll take a few moments to have a look.
